Visits to the Telescope

Features and specifications

There are regular public visits organized to the Department of Astronomy Observatory. However high humidity and overcast skies during Winter, mean the timetable is highly dependent on the weather conditions.

Dates:

5th and 20th of each month.

Timetables:

From 19:00 to 21:00 p.m. (from April to September)
From 21:00 to 22:30 a.m. (October to March)

Number of people per visit:
10 to 20 people.

Special Situations:

School children and university students wishing to organize a group visit to the telescope, must be aware that the visit date is dependent on availability of the telescope and support staff.

Program of the visit:

1. Observation through the telescope.
2. Depending on weather conditions and its position in the sky, observable objects may include: the Moon, planets of the Solar System including Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; supernova nebulae surrounding dying stars, groupings of nearby stars in our Galaxy including globular and open clusters, and even other galaxies.

Important Information to take into account before a visit:

1. The observation through the telescope is performed only if weather permits. We require clear, cloudless nights without rain in order to see celestial objects.

2. The number of visitors may not exceed 20 people, due to limited space in the area surrounding the telescope.

3. Children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult. Please note that it is necessary to climb a flight of stairs to access the telescope. All school group visits must be accompanied by a teacher.

4. For security reasons, the building on which the telescope is located (Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences) is locked at night. Therefore, the meeting point for the visits of public is on the outskirts of the main entrance of the building (next to the sign marked "Telescope"). Visitors will be guided to and from the telescope by staff at the Department of Astronomy UdeC.
