2009
All Year: day and night visits to the 30cm telescope in the Faculty continue. Typically six groups of 10-20 people attend per month.

All Year: Explora Organized Astronomy Presentations in the 8th region: roughly 15 one hour presentations by the five astronomy professors in various cities within the region, scheduled through the year.

April 26: `Yuri's Night' at the Havanna Club. Astronomy related video conferences and presentations followed by a DJ party. Organized by students of Pedagogia with some support from Astronomy.

April 14: Explora Organized Astronomy Workshop for 100 high school Physics Teachers: two presentations from Astronomers plus four one hour (repeated) workshops organized by us.

April 12: Star Party: 100 hours of astronomy

March: Presentations to Red de Profesores de Fisica

February 16 to March 10: Inflatable Planetarium visits Talcahuano (1 week), Santa Juana (1 week), Penco (1 week) in Feb-Mar 2009. Total public served approx. 2000. Support from Gemini Observatory; funding from Fondo ALMA 31060012, Fondecyt 1080324, Fondap Astronomy

January 30 - February 1: UdeC booth at Astroday, La Serena. Funding from Fondo ALMA 31060012

January 5: UdeC participation in Chilean node of IYA2009. Funding from Fondo ALMA 31060012

2008
All Year: day and night visits to the 30cm telescope in the Faculty continue. Typically six groups of 10-20 people attend per month.

CG Jimenez gave a workshop for UdeC undergraduate students of education. The workshop focused on training students in the Family Astro and Hands-on Optics Programs. Materials contibuted by Gemini.

March-December: Organized Science Academy of Astronomy with participation of 10 schools, approx. 12 students per school. Involved weekly visits to schools to conduct 2hr workshops and activites. Included two video conferences between students of Concepcion and La Serena to share educational experiences. Support and material from OPCC and Gemini. Partial funding from Fondo ALMA 31060012.

April (3 weeks) and June (2 weeks): Inflatable Planetarium visits Talcahuano (2 weeks), Penco (1 week), Hualpen (1 week). Total public served approx. 3000. Support from Gemini Observatory; funding from Fondo ALMA 31060012.

UdeC participation (CG Jimenez) in various planning meetings in Santiago for Chilean node of IYA2009. Partial funding from Fondo ALMA 31060012

March-July: CG Jimenez gave a workshop on The Invisible Universe at four meetings of the Red de Profesores de Fisica. Materials from Chandra Observatory.

February 1-5: one week visit with approx. 135 students and 10 high school teachers to La Serena, CTIO, Gemini, Observatorio Cerro Mayu as part of UdeC Explora project on light pollution. Funding from Explora EST1/017 and Fondo ALMA 31060012

January-February: second part of UdeC Explora project on Light Pollution: termination of light pollution meters, measurements in the field, and related workshops. Funding from Explora EST1/017.

2007

All Year: day and night visits to the 30cm telescope in the Faculty continue. Typically six groups of 10-20 people attend per month.

August-December: Organized Science Academy of Astronomy with the participation of 10 schools, approx. 12 students and one professor per school. Weekly visits to schools to conduct 2 hour workshops per weeek and regular activities. Included the participation of high school students in monthly laboratory activities to build a tool for the estimation of light pollution in their respective neighborhoods. Several seminars, including talks by Dr. Malcom Smith and Pedro Sanhueza of the OPCC were organized as part of this project. Monetary support from Explora EST1/017 (7million pesos), materials from OPCC and Gemini. Partial funding from Fondo ALMA 31060012.

August: UdeC Astronomy Travelling Exhibition visits Arauco for one week. Guided and individual tours accomodated more than 1000 visitors.

March-June: CG Jimenez gave a workshop on the SETI Astrobiology program at four meetings of the Red de Profesores de Fisica, and undergraduate students of U. de Concepcion. Materials from SETI, NASA, NAI.

February: UdeC Astronomy Travelling Exhibition visits the central plaza of Talcahuano for two weeks. Guided and individual tours accomodated more than 1000 visitors.

 

2006

October-November: Two video conferences from SETI at our faculty: 1. "Astrobiology and the Search for Life on Mars and Elsewhere" by Dr. Margaret Race, SETI, and 2. "The Search for Life in the Universe" Dr. Jill Tarter, SETI Director.
