Lorenzo Monaco is a 4th year ESO research fellow. During the first three years of his fellowship Lorenzo worked at ESO Santiago and the La Silla Observatory. He was Instrument Scientist (IS) of the multi-mode instrument EFOSC2 and 2nd IS of the high resolution spectrograph HARPS. He is currently spending his 4th year of the fellowship at the Univ. de Concepcion. Lorenzo received his PhD in astronomy from the Bologna University in 2004. Before joining ESO, he also covered a postdoctoral position at the Trieste Observatory.

His research activity is focussed on the study of resolved stellar populations in the Local Group with the main aims of (i) understanding the processes which drive galaxy formation and (ii) testing observationally the viable solutions to the challenges posed to our current comprehension of stellar evolution. He is proficient in the computation of model atmospheres, synthetic spectra and abundance analysis with the Kurucz codes (ATLAS, SYNTHE,....). His technical expertise also include PSF fitting techniques for photometry in crowded stellar field.
